Both Enzyme-based treatments and silver-based water treatments offer alternatives to traditional chlorine and bromine for maintaining water quality in an electric hot tub. Here’s how they compare in terms of effectiveness, maintenance, and suitability:
1. How They Work
Enzyme-Based Treatment
• Uses a blend of natural enzymes (derived from seaweed) to break down organic matter like oils, lotions, and sweat.
• Reduces the buildup of scum and biofilm in the spa.
• Works as a water clarifier rather than a true sanitizer (it doesn’t actively kill bacteria but helps prevent buildup that bacteria feed on).
Silver-Based Water Treatment (e.g. Simple Silver)
• Silver is a natural antimicrobial agent that disrupts bacteria and algae growth.
• Silver ion cartridges release controlled amounts of silver to keep water sanitised.
• Silver alone is not a full sanitization solution—it is often used alongside our electric ozone filter system to fully disinfect spa water.

2. Effectiveness in Treating Tub Water
Feature | Enzyme Treatment | Silver-Based Treatment |
Kills bacteria and viruses? | No, only breaks down organic contaminants | Partially |
Prevents biofilm and scum? | Yes, by breaking down organic waste | Yes, as silver inhibits bacterial growth |
Odor and feel | No chlorine smell, water feels soft | No chlorine smell, water stays clear |
Water clarity | Helps keep water clear | Helps keep water clear |
Maintenance required | Needs regular filter cleaning, may need additional sanitisation | Needs replacement of cartridges every few months |
3. Maintenance & Longevity of sanitation for electric tubs
Enzyme Treatments:
• Requires regular filter cleaning since enzymes work by breaking down contaminants into particles that are caught in the filter.
• May need a periodic shock treatment to prevent bacterial growth.
• Works well for people sensitive to chemicals but doesn’t replace a dedicated sanitiser.
• Silver-Based Treatments:
• Cartridges last 3-4 months before needing replacement.
• May still need to shock with some low-level chlorine or hydrogen peroxide to fully sanitise the water.
4. Suitability for an Electric Spa Tub
• If you want a completely natural approach: Enzymes are good for reducing scum and organic buildup but is not a full sanitation system.
• If you prefer a low-chemical but effective sanitiser: Silver ion treatments offer better microbial control but still requires our ozone filter for complete sanitation.
